Reflective writing Nº1: The Observation Stage

I. Introduction

·       What do you think the cartoon provided below is illustrating?  Why? Answer briefly.

I think that the cartoon illustrates the idea of see things, or observe though someone else’s eyes and not through your own eyes. It is very usual to get to know things through someone else, and when that happen you have a partial view of the situations, because you were not there to really know what happened, when happened and under what circumstances happened, so you get that information from another source that can be “contaminated”. I mean that, the observation provided by someone else of one situation can be influenced by prejudice. So that our vision of a situation or issue cannot be as objective as it could be if we make an observation on our own.

II. Reflective writing

·       Taking into account the information you collected during the observation stage,

1.     Reflect on the importance of the initial observation period in final practicum.

From my personal point of view, the observation stage in this final practicum is very important, because it will be the key to get involved in a school. It is very different from the previous practicum, since now we are teachers in schools, we are not there just to observe or help the teachers, but to teach and deal with different issues that are related to teaching. For example I had to learn all the formalities that I had to follow to get copies of a text at the copy center, or to reserve the data show for a class, so the observation stage really help me to know those things and to develop better my job now that I’m teaching.
I had the opportunity to know other teachers and to get involved in the school activities as “fiestas patrias en mi colegio” and to share with the head master of the school and other teachers in a “honour wine” meeting to celebrate our national day too in September.

2.     Refer to the observed issues in assigned school, and explain if these issues caused a change on the expectations you had about this particular period.

As I mentioned before, the observation stage helped me to get involved in the school, it was not only that I tried to know the school, but also the school started to know me.
I felt that it was necessary because I was a completely unknown person, not only for my students, but also for the people that work there, but every day I went there I met someone new and his/her role in the school too.

3.     How did you feel? Provide one example you consider most relevant to support your answer.

I felt really good, it was important for me the fact that my guide teacher gave me a great support to know the school, the teachers and also the students.
I have to say that it was really nice and important when Francisca and I were invited to the meeting of the teachers and workers from school to celebrate our national day. The teacher staff was really nice with us, we had the chance to know them better, to talk about our experiences and the teachers perception of the classes that we were in charge of.
I felt really involved with the staff of teachers and workers of the school. The headmaster of the school was really kind. He wished me the best for my last stage of my career and also offers his support for anything I would need.

**(Francisca is another prospective teacher of English from Universidad Andres Bello. She  is also in the final stage of her career. She is a good colleague and has become a really good friend too)

Reunion de Apoderados

I. Datos Generales:

1. Nombre del Establecimiento Educacional: Colegio Nueva Era Siglo XXI, Curauma.

2. Curso: 7mo B

3. Profesor jefe: Cristian Pino Osorio

4. Profesor en Práctica: Paulina Olea Vergara

5. Fecha: 08/10/09

6. Hora: 19:06 hrs. – 20:16 hrs.

7. Tabla de la reunión:

Bienvenida; “Vamos creciendo y mejorando”

- Intervención de directiva de curso

- Escuela para padres.

- Informaciones

II. Instrucciones:

1. Complete la información que encontrará a continuación.

To build a climate of respect and trust I decided to create a set of rules, for students and the teacher (me).
I based my idea on the cartoon "fairly odd parents" where there is a book with rules called "Da Rules" and the main character is a student called Timmy Turner that in spite of the fact that he has the possibility to have the company of two fairy odd parents, he has to follow a set of rules to make use of  the magic powers of the fairy parents.
My students really like the idea, an agree on the terms I proposed.

Team Teaching Report

TEAM TEACHING STAGE
Name of student: Paulina Olea Vergara
Name of School: Nueva Era Siglo XXI, Curauma
Date:
Task Nº1: Collaboration activities
For the following questions describe as accurately as you can how you have collaborated in school assigned:

1. What kind of activity did you perform the first time you were asked for help? How long did it take?
The first time I was asked for help had to play a recording for an English test called “certamen”. The idea of the test is not only to measure students’ knowledge in English, but also to prepare them for their future performance in the national standardized tests as “PSU” and “SIMCE”. The test was taken simultaneously in the school and it lasted 2 periods of 45 minutes each. My role was to go to every classroom and play the recording twice for the children, and to answer any question they could have.

After that I was asked to check some dictations and some quizzes of my class. And help during the classes with questions they could have while developing some tasks.

2. What were the students doing before you started helping out?

The behavioural problems in classes appear before the lesson stars and after it finishes, the students really like to ask for permission to go to the bathroom when the lesson starts, or they are somewhere else in the school. So I had to help out with those situations, when they appeared.

3. How did the students react? Describe the atmosphere of the room and the levels of engagement in the room.

The students react well, they were never disrespectful with me, and they used to comply with my requests of having seat, keep quiet, or respect their classmates. At the same time they started to know me, and I started to know them, so it was easier to deal with misbehaviour.

4. What other assignments were asked you to do? How often?

I was asked to help with the revision of some dictations, quizzes and to help the teachers during the classes to show some flashcards and help students to figure out the meaning of some phrasal verbs that appeared on them.

5. Were you asked to prepare any kind of special audio visual material learning material for the students? Were they used? How effective were they?

No, I wasn’t asked to prepare any audio visual material for the students , but I was asked to give the teacher some ideas about how to use some colourful sheet of papers that he had folded in her locker, and I came up with the idea of some pictures of Olympic sports and to relate them with some sports verbs. They have not been used yet, because I am going to cover that part of the unit.

Task 2: Lesson Planning
Answer the following questions and explain how you planned the learning activities for your students. Be as precise as you can.

1. How did you get the information for planning the lessons for your students?
First, I took into account the previous lessons that the teacher did, that are in the class book, the content they know and the competences they have demonstrated in classes while I’ve been observing them. I also planned the lessons according to their lifestyles and interests (I applied and appraisal to my students to know their interests)

2. Did your guide teacher give you any suggestions for planning?

Yes, my guide teacher gave me some advices regarding students’ preferences in tasks to develop. For example my students really enjoy playing roles in dialogues, so my teacher suggested me to do something like that because they like performing the book’s dialogues, using costumes and taking the role of every character in the stories they have seen in classes.

3. How long did it take to you to prepare learning material for your first lesson?

It took me around 2 days to prepare my first lesson. Because it included audio visual material, pictures, and activities on a ppt presentation, so it is time consuming.

Observation Report

OBSERVATION STAGE

Task 1: The School and Learning Environment

Name of student: Paulina Olea Vergara.
Name of School: Colegio nueva Era Siglo XXI, Curauma.
Number of students: 27
Date: September, 9th .
Class: 7th grade “B”
Briefly and objectively describe the following aspects:

1. The school:
Describe the general background of the school including the physical location, organisation, student population, philosophy and educational and behavioural policies.

The school is located in Avda. Cardenal Samoré 1850, Curauma. It is located in the centre of this “new” town. The school is almost new; it has just five years in Curauma. This school belongs to a corporative group of schools called “Nueva Era Siglo XXI” that are located in different regions of our country. The students’ population is about 450 from kinder to high school level.

The philosophy of the school is founded under the principles and values of the Christian humanism, paying special attention on the human uniqueness and goodness. The most important values that are under these principles are; love, truth, justice, tolerance, freedom, responsibility and honesty, among others.

The educational policies of the school are established according to the skills and values that people of the new millennium must have to face it. Therefore the meaningful learning is one of the main educational policies of the school, valuing life experience as the cornerstone of knowledge and life. They try to get these meaningful learning developing critic students, with consciousness to assume their responsibility in their role in life.

In spite of the fact that the school has as respect as a main principle, the behavioural policies are not so strong, the students are used to not to follow rules, they don’t like formality, they miss classes, or are used to leave the school at any time calling their parents.

2. The classroom
Describe the atmosphere of the room and the levels of engagement in the room. Make notes on seating, sight lines, space, air, light, whiteboard, equipment, etc

The room is big enough to 27 students, but no more than that. It has luminosity, because it has big windows in both sides of the room, but it is quite cold, because the sun never reaches the classroom. The air is quite good because in Curauma the weather is windy most of the time. The students are arranged in four lines of double tables and normal chairs.

There is a medium size whiteboard, a big table for the teacher, some furniture for students to keep their workshops or materials and some hangers at the end on the room. The room is painted in blue, the windows have curtains and there is an empty bulletin board. The school has equipment as a computer lab, data show and radios, but must be required with anticipation to use them during a lesson; they are not inside the classroom for free use.

3. The activities & resources
a) Make notes on the kind of activities used, the nature of student involvement, balance of student doing things and teacher doing things

The kinds of activities that I have observed are mainly listening tasks, reading comprehension tasks and role playing tasks. The students are very used to them and are really good at those kinds of tasks. They really love the role playing tasks because, they have the opportunity to speak in English, and they feel that they can handle the language. Some students are really involved in the lesson with the tasks because they usually use their English books “travellers”, and they enjoy their lessons. Of course that are some students that sometimes do not feel as motivated as others do, because they feel afraid of not having the proper pronunciation in English, but the teacher always give them confidence to do the tasks successfully.

b) Describe the resources used and the materials available within the school. How are the resources used in the classroom?

The resources and materials available within the school are computer lab, data show, radios, DVD players, the library and the copy centre. The radio is widely used by the guide teacher, because under the guidance of the ministry of education and the program of 7th grade the reading and listening skills are the most important to develop, so that is what he has done.

Task 2: Student´s learning
In this second observation task, you should focus on the things that help to create conditions for effective learning and on the aspects that play a part in preventing learning.
1. The learners

How motivated are the learners? Why? To what extent are they taking part in their own learning? To what extent are they expecting the teacher to do the work for them?

Since I have been observing my class, I have realized that most of the students are very motivated to learn English, they are surrounded by it, because of music, TV, sports; video games etc, so they are very interested of knowing more about the language.

They are very used to understand the meaning of words or content through body language, context or translation, but most of the time they are not expecting the teacher to do the work for them.

2. Behaviour during classroom activities
Describe the ways students are encouraged to participate in activities. Are there any particular strategies for managing issues and motivating students? Are there any students with special needs?

I have observed that my students have a really good relationship with their teacher, he is really supportive with them, and I think that is why students are so motivated. Furthermore I do believe that they are intrinsically motivated to learn English.

The teacher every class writes on the board the goal of the lesson, and starts it, and the students react very well. It is certainly true that there are some days that students are really hectic, because they are adolescents, which are growing up, but sometimes behave as children. Sometimes the students show some misbehaviour attitudes that appear because not even the school manages that well the rules of behaviour for students (it is a big issue among teachers, parents and the headmaster of the school)

In my class there are not students with special needs, there is only a girl called Leidy, which has a problem with her right hand, and she always keep it in her pocket. But she is not at all target of bulling within the class, nor the school.
3. Discuss the learning styles and levels of English in the classroom.

The learning styles are very similar; they are very skilled at listening and reading. When the students are asked to produce writing tasks they are very good at it too, but it is not as regular as the other skills are used in the classroom. I do believe that the level of English is very good, the students are very motivated to learn English and they really have a good base of knowledge. They know how to ask for help and guidance, when they face problems dealing with tasks, and have really good understanding of the language.
